Grand Canyon
The Grand Canyon in Arizona has been carved by the Colorado River
through high plateaus in northwestern Arizona. The North rim at 8000
feet is about 1000 feet higher than the South Rim, which in turn is
about 5000 feet above the river. The strata bared in the canyon range
from the dark metamorphic rocks of the inner gorge through layers
of red sandstone and grey limestone. The North Rim is high enough to
get heavy snow in winter, and has a thick tree cover.
The 7.5-minute Cape Royal DEM is at the eastern end of the Grand
Canyon, where the river makes a right angle turn, from going South
alongside the Kaibab plateau to cutting West right across it. This
DEM is made by digitizing a contour map, rather than from directly
scanning aerial photos. It is relatively free of artifacts and has
more fine detail than many of the older DEMs.
The GrandCanyon.DEMset file will set up the rendering parameters
appropriately for this area. Select it in the first file requester
that appears when you Save Data from GeoRama program. You can use this
as a starting point for experimenting with your own rendering scheme
in Panorama.
